昨日はガブリエルはやってきませんでしたので、リベカは少しほっとしていました。
　学校から帰ってきて、今はおやつの時間です。お母さんがいれてくれたミルクココアを飲みながら、今日は少し冷静になって考えます。（ガブリエルはどうしておしゃべりできるんだろう？）
　そんな風に考えている時、目の前にガブリエルが現れました。
「やあ、リベカこんにちは」
　びっくりしたリベカは慌てて
「こんにちは。フクロウのガブリエルさん。どうぞ、お菓子」
といってポケットをさぐりはじめます（やっぱり、ガブリエルにお菓子をあげたほうがよいと考えてポケットに忍び込ませておいたのでした）。
「いや、ありがとう。その気持ちで十分だよ。今度は私が君にお礼をしなくてはね。何がよいかな？」
「うーん、私はいいわ。クリスマスのプレゼントはもうお願いしているの。長靴下はね、私、ひとりでつくったんだよ！　素敵なの。ガブリエルも見て」
　そう言ってリベカはツリーの元へ駆け出します。靴下を持ち上げて後ろを振り向くと、そこにガブリエルの姿はありませんでした。
「リベカ、何か呼んだ？」
　ジンジャークッキーの型を探していたお母さんが、キッチンのストックルームから顔を出します。
「ううん、何でもないよ」
（まったく、ガブリエルは人の話も聞かないでいなくなるなんて失礼だわ）
　リベカは自分の編んだ長靴下をそっとツリーの下に戻しました。
　お母さんがストックルームから戻ってきます。
「さあ、クッキーを焼きましょう」

Rebecca was a little bit relieved that Gabriel didn’t show up yesterday. She was back home from school and was enjoying the chocolate milk that her mother had prepared for snack time. Today, she was calmly thinking to herself, ‘How is it that Gabriel can talk?’
 Suddenly, Gabriel appeared in front of the pondering Rebecca.
“Hello there, Rebecca.”
Surprised, Rebecca replied,
“Hello, Mr. Gabriel the owl. I have sweet for you.”
She felt around inside her pocket for the sweet. Earlier she had decided that it would be best if she gave the sweet to Gabriel, and had stuck it in her pocket.
“Why thank you. But your generosity is enough. It’s my turn to do you a favor. What would it be?”
“Oh I’m okay. I’ve already asked for my Christmas present. And I made my stocking myself! It’s so wonderful. You need to see it, Gabriel.”
Rebecca ran towards the Christmas tree. She picked up her stocking and turned around, but Gabriel was nowhere to be found.
“Did you say something, Rebecca?” said her mother, looking out from the storage room. She was looking for cookie cutters to use for making gingerbread cookies.
“No… nothing, Mother.”
How rude of Gabriel to leave without listening to me, thought Rebecca. She gently placed the stocking she had knit herself back under the tree.
“Now let’s make some cookies!”
