「まあ、リベカどうしたの？」
　お母さんは学校から帰ってきたリベカを見てびっくりしてしまいました。顔中にひっかき傷があるのです。リベカのお母さんは学校の先生でしたからすぐにピンと来ました。
（きっと女の子とケンカしたんだわ）
「なんでもない！」
　リベカは、ただいまも言わずに自分の部屋へ駆け込みました。部屋には天の使いのフクロウもいたのですが、リベカはそのことにも気付かずベッドの中に潜り込みました。そして、ヒックヒックと泣き声をあげました。
　リベカのお母さんは、ゆっくりとミルクをあたためて、そしてクッキーを添えてリベカの部屋へやって来ました。フクロウはぼんやりと消えていきました。
「リベカ、おやつよ」
「いらない」
「食べたら、降りてきなさいね」
　リベカはとても腹を立てていました。ケンカの相手はアンニカです。アンニカはリベカの一番の女の子の友達でした。
　ことのあらましはこうです——。

　リベカはお父さんのお仕事が大好きでした。もちろんお父さん自身も好きでしたが、何より作品が大好きでした。それなのに、こともあろうにアンニカはリベカに向かってこう言ったのです。
「教会のドアノブ、なんだか下品ね」
　それは、アンニカのおばあさんのつぶやきをアンニカが聞いてしまって言ったのです。（お年寄りは時々変化に対してとても攻撃的になります。それは癖みたいなものです。ドアノブがあまりにピカピカになっていて驚いてしまって、とっさにつぶやいてしまったのでした。昨日は教会で祈り会があったのです）
　リベカはとても頭に来て、いきなりアンニカの頬をなぐりました。アンニカは突然のことでびっくりして、思いがけずアンニカの飼い猫がよくやるように、リベカの顔を引っ掻きました。
　そこからは取っ組み合いのケンカです。
　友達がようやくふたりを引き離しましたけれど、リベカはおさまりません。
「あのドアノブ、素敵だもの！」
　アンニカはその様子を見て、ようやく自分がいけないことをしたことに気付きましたけれど、もう引っ込みがつきません。
「ベッキーのバカ！」
　ふたりはそうしてケンカ別れをしてしまいました。
　その夜、アンニカはお母さんとリベカの家へやって来ました。アンニカは自分が悪いことをしたのをよく分かっていたのですね。でもリベカは決して会いませんでした（時々リベカはとても強情です）。
　アンニカとお母さんはトボトボと帰っていきました。
　天の使いのフクロウが夜中に現れて、リベカの頬を優しくなぜると引っ掻き傷は綺麗に消えてしまいました。

“Rebecca, what happened?” exclaimed mother as Rebecca came home from school. She had scratch marks all over her face. Mother was a school teacher so she had a good idea of what might have happened. She probably was in a fight with another girl.
“Nothing!”
Rebecca ran to her room without looking at her mother. The angel-owl was in her room, but Rebecca buried herself in her bed without noticing and started to cry.
Mother warmed some milk and brought it to Rebecca’s room along with some cookies. The owl faded away.
“Here’s your snack, Rebecca.”
“I don’t want any.”
“Come down after you eat it, okay?”
Rebecca was very angry. The girl she had a fight with was Annika, her best friend.
This is what happened. Rebecca loved her father very much. Not only did she love her father but she also loved his works of art. Of all things, this is what Annika had said to Rebecca.
“The church’s doorknob seems somewhat distasteful.”
Annika had repeated what she heard her grandma mumble. Old people sometimes take offense at change, its like a habit. At yesterday’s prayer meeting, Annika’s grandma was surprised to see such a shiny doorknob and had mumbled it out loud.
Rebecca became angry and suddenly punched Annika in the face. Surprised and without thinking, Annika responded by scratching Rebecca’s face like her cat often does.
From there it was an entangled fight.
Finally, their friends broke up the fight, but Rebecca wouldn’t calm down.
“It’s a pretty doorknob!”
Annika now realized that she had done something wrong, but there was no way to turn back the time.
“Stupid Becky!”
And so the two were still angry with each other.
That night, Annika and her mother came to Rebecca’s house. Annika knew very well that she had done something wrong. But Rebecca wouldn’t see her. Rebecca is sometimes very stubborn.
Annika and her mother plodded back to their home.
The angel-owl came in the middle of the night and as it gently brushed against Rebecca’s cheek, the scratch marks faded away.
