大学のＥSSでの英会話練習は相変わらず堅苦しい
今度○○大学との「理想の教育」についてのディスカッションがある
△△大学との「公害」についてのディベートがある

「他大学に恥ずかしくないように」入念な準備をすること
「文法間違いがないように」丁寧に文章を作り上げること
「想定される質問への対策」を怠らないようにすること

部室の中で交わされる「英会話」も正確無比を競い合っているかのようだ
「What time did you get up this morning ？」
「I got up at six thirty this morning 」
「What do you do first after you got up ?」
「I have a cup of coffee first after I got up 」
「It's cloudy today . Do you think it will rain soon ?」
「Yes , it's cloudy today . I think that it will start raining this afternoon 」
完璧なのだろうがどうも会話を楽しんでいるようには思われない
親しみや人間味が感じられないような英語のやり取りになっている
日本人同士で英語を話しているときには一種の堅苦しさが感じられる

２週間に一度程度の米軍基地でのラムダやスーザンとの会話は正反対だ
ポンポンとリズム感が感じられるような英語のやり取りになる
ＥSSの部室での会話をラムダにしてみた
「What time do you get up this morning ？」
「Well , seven o'clock 」
「What do you do first after you got up ？」
「Say , wash my face 」
「Do you think it will rain today ？」
「Maybe , seems like 」
簡潔で相手の聞きたいことだけをサッと伝えるといった応答だ
質問するこちら側も緊張しないでリラックスできる

話題が音楽のことになったときのやり取りはこんな風だった
「Do you like music ?」
「Yes , you ?」
「Me , too . I like Beatles songs 」
「Oh , you do ！What songs of them ?」
「Let it be , Long winding road , Something , and so on 」
「How nice ! They are my favorite , too 」
「Can you sing them ?」
「Yes , I can . But I'm a tone deaf」
「What does tone deaf mean ?」
「Means I can't sing nicely . Out of tune 」
「Oh , me , too 」
「You , too ! We are good friends , aren't we ?」
当意即妙と言う感じの英語のキャッチボールのようだ
緊張もしない、気も使わない、話していて心地よさが感じられる

YS: Yes , it really is . I would like another cup .
ES: Would you ? Me too .
YS: Shall we have something to eat ?

YS: Why not ? We have had no breakfast .
ES: Well , to tell the truth , I have pu on some weight .
YS: Have you ? How much ?
ES: As much as 500 grams .
YS: That's nothing . They have very nice cake here .
ES: Not for me , please .
