村はずれの浮島がある池のほとり　
そして初夏　

目立たぬ地味な草に　
可憐な花が咲く。

なんとも言えぬ美しさゆえ　
この花を摘みたがる者が絶えぬ。

茎は意外に丈夫。
葉は細く鋭い。

下手に摘み取ろうとすれば　
指を切る。

見れば　
白い花と赤い花がある。

真っ白な花は　
まだ一度も指を切った事がない。

少しでも赤ければ　
すでに血が染み込んでいる。

真っ赤な花には触れてはいけない。
たまに指ごと切り落とされる。

指のない村人が多いのは　
そのためじゃ。

ゆえに村人ら、この草を　
指切り草、と呼べり。
　

Grass Cutting Fingers

Out of the village,
on the banks of a pond with floating islands,
and early summer,
a pretty flower blooms pretty inconspicuous grass.

Because of the beauty that can not be said anything,
there are always people who want to pick this flower.

The stem is surprisingly strong.
Leaves are thin and sharp.

If you try to pick it poorly, cut your finger.
If you look, there are white flowers and red flowers.

White flowers have never cut fingers yet.

If it is red even a little,
blood is already impregnated.

Do not touch bright red flowers.
Sometimes the fingers are cut off.

That is why there are many villagers without fingers.

Therefore, the villagers call this grass
"Grass Cutting Fingers."
