猫は一度こちらを振り返ると　
そのまま雑木林へ逃げ込んでいった。

まるで僕を誘惑するみたいに　
茂みの奥へと姿を消してしまった。

ひとりで足を踏み入れてはいけない、
そう大人から言われている場所だった。

ひょっとすると、あの猫の罠かもしれない。

でも、いまさら引き返したくなかった。
あいつをこのまま逃がしたくなかった。

だから、僕は道をはずれ、茂みをかき分け　
たったひとり、雑木林に入っていったんだ。

人の気配のない雑木林の中は薄暗く　
ひんやり、ひっそりとしていた。

切り抜き色紙のような木漏れ日が　
クモの巣を銀色に浮かび上がらせていた。

なんとも言えないにおいがして　
あちこちに不法投棄物が目についた。

空缶、空ビン、濡れた雑誌、ポリ袋、
錆びた自転車まで捨てられてあった。

着せ替え人形が腐葉土に埋もれていた。

汚れた人形の腕を持ち上げると　
腰の部分から千切れてしまった。

近くに、いやらしい色彩の毒キノコが　
落葉を押し上げるように突き出ていた。

その不気味な傘のところを蹴飛ばすと　
黄色っぽい煙のような粉が舞った。

吸い込まないように僕は顔をそむけた。

なかなか猫の姿は見つからなかった。

音を立てないように注意しながら　
さらに奥へと雑木林を進んでいった。

大きな切り株があった。

年輪のあるその丸いテーブルの上　
トカゲの尻尾がのたうちまわっていた。

あの猫のいたずらに違いない。
いかにもあいつがやりそうなことだ。

しばらくすると、尻尾は動かなくなった。

なんだかいやな予感がした。
そして、その予感は正しかったのだ。

なにか白いものが木々の間に見えた。
それはゆっくり動いていた。

僕は立ちすくんでしまった。

あれは大人たちが噂していた怪物。
見てはいけないものを見てしまったのだ。

うっかり枯れ枝を踏んでしまい　
その折れる音があたりに響き渡った。

本当に心臓が止まりそうになった。

恐ろしい姿の白い怪物がこちらを向いた。
まともに目と目が合ってしまった。

やはり、あいつの罠だったんだ。
足を踏み入れてはいけなかったんだ。

肉食の獣が獲物を見つけたみたいに　
いやらしく舌なめずりしながら

白い怪物はニタリと笑うのだった。

なにも考えられなかった。
立ちすくんで、一歩も動けなかった。
ヘビににらまれたカエルみたいだった。

ゆっくりと白い怪物が近づいてきた。

周囲の木立ちが手をつなぎ始めた。
ここから絶対に逃がさないつもりなのだ。

木々の樹皮が横に裂け、ニタリと笑った。
もう僕はダメになるんだ、と思った。

どこか遠く、あるいは耳もとかもしれないけど　
あいつの鳴き声を聞いたような気がした。

Cat's Forest

Once the cat looked back over this way,
he ran away to the forest as it was.

He disappeared to the back of the bush as if tempting me.

Do not step on your foot alone,

Perhaps it might be that cat's trap.

But I did not want to turn back now.
I did not want to let him escape.

That is why I left the road and plucked the bushes
and I entered the forest alone.

The interior of a forest without human signs was dim, cool, quiet.
The sunny leaves like clippings cut out the spider's web in silver.

I smelled a little poorly, and I saw illegal waste here and there.

Empty cans, empty bottles, wet magazines, plastic bags,
rusty bicycles were thrown away.

The clothes doll was buried in the mulch.

I picked up the dirty doll's arm and it was torn from the waist.

In the vicinity, poisonous mushrooms of unpleasant color
protruded to push up defoliation.

When I kicked the creepy umbrella,
powdery like yellowish smoke soared.

I turned away, not to breathe it.

I could not find the figure of that cat easily.

I went further into the forest to the back.

There was a big stump.

On the round table with its annual ring,
the tail of the lizard was stumbling.

It must be a naugh of that cat.

I saw something white between the trees.
It was moving slowly.

That is a monster rumored by adults.
I saw what I should not see.

I inadvertently stepped on dead branches,

My heart really came to stop.

A white monster in a horrible figure turned to me.
The eyes and eyes met decently.
