「小春日和」とは、晩秋から初冬にかけて
移動性高気圧に覆われた時などの温暖な天候のこと。

「小春」とは陰暦10月。

現在の太陽暦では11月頃に相当し、
この頃の陽気が春に似ているため。

英語なら、“Indian summer”が近い。
「インド人の夏」ではなく、「インディアンの夏」。

語源は諸説あり、次の説が一番おもしろい。

アメリカ開拓時代、インディアンは
夏に植民者を襲撃することが多かった。

寒くなると、その頻度が少なくなるので
まあ比較的、穏やかに過ごせる。

ところが暖かい日が続いてしまうと
また襲撃される心配をしなければならない。

植民者たちは、いまいましさを込め　
それを“Indian summer”と呼んだ。

Indian Summer and the Gate of Heaven

In Japanese, "Koharubiyori" means warm weather
