"Atarashii" in Japanese. It is one of the Japanese adjectives and has a similar meaning to "new" in English. I use this word when I do something new. If I buy a book in a bookshop rather than a second-hand bookshop, I say I have bought a new book. Or if I am trying to change jobs, I tend to say I am looking for a new job. But when I lived in London, I was surprised to find that the word 'new' is used in an unexpected way in English. I found it when I was talking with the owner’s couple of the house I rent there. On the first day I began to live in the house, I met them in the house as I asked them to explain the house in detail. So they explained to each room and the important points to use the house. And when we were in the dining room, they told me that the dining table and chairs were so old that they would bring “new ones”. When I heard it, I was very glad of it and I expected them to buy and bring new ones rather than second-hand ones. But contrary to my expectations, they had brought a dining table and chairs that were old and used. At the moment, I learnt that the word “new” in English had a different meaning. It does not always mean "not being used or tried by anyone before". In this case, it meant that anything that had not been in the house before and was brought in recently was new. And I found it clearer and more appropriate to use “brand-new” when I would like to say that something has not been used or tried by anyone before.
Just a few weeks later, my colleague met the same situation. He was also by the owner of his house that a new dining table would be arriving soon, and he brought a used dining table.
Since then, I have been very careful about using the word in English.

本語の「新しい」。これは形容詞のひとつで、英語の「new」に似た意味を持っています。何か新しいことをするときにこの言葉を使います。古本屋ではなく本屋で本を買った時は、「新しい」本を買ったと言います。 また、転職しようとするときは、「新しい」仕事を探していると言うことが多いです。でも、ロンドンに住んでいたとき、「新しい」という言葉が英語では意外な使われ方をすることに驚きました。それは、私が借りている家のオーナー夫妻と話している時の事でした。その家に住み始めた初日、家でオーナー夫妻に会いました。各部屋の説明や、家の使い方のポイントを教えてもらったのです。そして、ダイニングルームにいるとき、ダイニングテーブルと椅子が古いので、「新しいもの」を持ってくると言われました。 それを聞いたとき、とてもうれしくなり、中古ではなく新しいものを買って持ってきてくれるのだろうと期待しました。でも、予想に反して、使い古しのダイニングテーブルと椅子を持ってきたのです。その時、英語の「新しい」という言葉には違う意味があることを学びました。「新しい」という言葉は、必ずしも「今まで誰も使ったことがない、試したことがない」という意味ではなかったのです。この場合、それまでこの家になく、最近持ち込まれたものはすべて新しいものという意味だったのです。そして、「誰も以前に使ったこともなく、試したこともないもの」を言いたいときには、"brand-new "を使うのがより明確で適切だとわかりました。
その数週間後、ボクの同僚も同じ事に遭遇しました。彼もまた、家のオーナーから「新しい」ダイニングテーブルがもうすぐ届くと言われたのですが、届いたのは中古のダイニングテーブルでした。
それ以来、この言葉を英語で使う時は、とても気をつけるようになりました。
