3rd post about my internship in Newark!
さてNewarkでのインターンシップについて続報。

（前回の投稿はコチラ↓　Previous post below）

前回はコミュニティスクール（以下CS）の優良事例についてのプロジェクトを紹介しましたが、実はこの他にも色々とやっていることがあるので、それを紹介したいと思います。
Last time I explained my project about collecting GPs in CS. Today I'm going to introduce others!

1. Refinement of parent survey

以前保護者に対して学習や生活習慣を聞く調査を行ったのですが、その回収率が思わしくなかったため、どうすれば回収率を上げることが出来るのか？というRecommendationを行いました。

I made a recommendation about how to improve response rates as the previous parent survey did not yield satisfactory response rate.

学校経由の保護者調査の文献があまりなかったのですが、以下の２つは参考になりました。
Although not many, these two research are very instrumental.

・Improving survey response rates from parents in school-based research using a multi-level approach.

・Obtaining active parental consent for school‐based research: a guide for researchers

Recommendationは以下の５ステージについてこんな方策があるよという具体例を挙げたのですが、色んな文献で強調されていたのが
・Stakeholder engagement（調査の関係者、この場合は校長や教員、保護者、生徒に事前に説明し理解を得ること）と
・Personalized message（可能な限り文面等を個別化すること）です。

その他、保護者は11～13時と17～20時が一番メールを見るのでその間に送れ！なんてのもあって面白かったです。

My recommendation is divided into 5 stages with specific tips for each. Two main things are stakeholder engagement and personalized message. There is also an interesting result that parents are more likely to respond when the email survey is sent bet 11am-1pm or 5-8pm.

・Stage 3 : Survey distribution
・Stage 4 : Survey reminders
・Stage 5 : Progress update to schools / teachers

また、EmailとMailどちらがより良いのか？という質問についても考えました。
一般的にはMailの方が回収率が高いのですが、Language issue（英語が母国語でない人が多い）がある場合は２種類調査票を作るためEmailの方が効率がよさそうです。
逆に、貧困地域でInternet接続できる人がそこまで多くない場合にはEmailだと結果にバイアスがかかってしまう可能性があるとのことでした。

I also took into account pros and cons of email/mail survey. Generally speaking, mail surveys have a higher response rate, but not that effective if there is language issue as we need to print out two types of surveys and then distribute them. On the other hand, if internat connect is not ubiquitous, results from email survey might be biased.

2. Analysis of school performance

こちらのNJ DOEのサイトを使って、CSを含む14の学校についてenrollement, demography, chronic absenteeism, suspension, test scoreといったデータの3年間の傾向を並べて一目で見れるようにし、分析をしました。

I listed school performance data over three years including enrollement, demography, chronic absenteeism, suspension, and test score in 14 schools using NJ DOE website.

しかし、suspensionについてはある学校が26%→13%→0.6%といった、有り得ない傾向をたどっていたり、test scoreは最近別のテストに移行したので2年間しか辿れるデータがない・・・と、中々上手くいかなかったです。。

ただchronic absenteeismについては明らかに傾向的な所があったのでそれは参考になりました。
ある高校では70%という数値があり、一瞬目を疑ってしまいました・・・でもこれが現実なんですよね。

However, not all data are useful, as one school's suspension rate changed from 26% to 13% next year and then to 9.6% next next year, and Newark transitioned to a different test (only data in 2 consecutive years are comparable). Chronic absenteeism gave me more sense, but I could not believe 70% as this rate at first. But this is a reality that we are faced with.

3. DREAM Program

さて、プロジェクトの紹介はこのあたりで終わりにして。
DREAMという子供達に放課後やサマープログラムを提供する団体の発表会があったので、それを見学させてもらいました。

Aside from projects, I visited a celebration of DREAM, which provides a summer and after school program to children.

以前はNYCのHarlemやSouth Bronxで活動しており、NYCの外は今回が初めてとのことです。
ここでは無料でヨガ等のエクササイズや読み書きのプログラムを低学年を中心に５週間提供したとのこと。
ヨガの発表を子供達が４グループに分かれてしたのですが、とてもかわいかったです^^

Previously they operated only in NYC, mainly Harlem and South Bronx, so this is their first time outside of NYC. Here they did an exercise such as yoga and also literacy program for five weeks for free, mainly to K-1 grades. Their performance below was soooo cute!!

学期中もプログラムを提供しないのかと聞いてみたところ、事務所がこちらにないこともあり当座はサマーのみとのこと。
やはり学校の授業と内容がうまくalignされてこそ相乗効果が上がると思うのですが、現実は一歩一歩ですよね。

When asked whether they will countinues during the school year, they said no as they don't have office here. I believe that these after school or summer programs should be better aligned with learning at school, but their situation is also understandable.
