イーユンリーの短編集、「千年の祈り」を読みました。アメリカでフランク•オコーナー賞、ヘミングウェイ賞を受賞した作品です。

中国の北京市で生まれ、北京大学の大学院から、アイオワ大学院に移り、それ以来ずっとアメリカで小説を書き続けています。現在、アメリカの市民権を得て執筆活動をしている彼女は、自身を中国にもアメリカにも馴染まない「アウトサイダー」と位置づけ、中国が舞台のストーリーを専門に書いています。

この中に収録されている彼女のデビュー作、「不滅」は、清王朝から文化大革命までの怒涛の時代を生きた元宦官の家族の生き様を描いたものですが、中国の歴史に疎い私には「え？マジかよ」とかなりショックを受ける内容で、国家とは何か、国民とは何かをどっしりと考えさせられる短編でした。

I read Yiyun Li’s short story, "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers” which won the Frank O'Connor Award and the Hemingway Award in the United States.

The story is heavy and deep, which is hard to imagine from her cheerful disposition seen in the video on the link.

Born in Beijing, China, she moved from graduate school at Peking University to graduate school in Iowa Univ, and has been writing fiction in the United States ever since. 

Now she is a U.S. citizen but she considers herself an "outsider" who doesn't fit in neither China nor the U.S., and she specializes in stories set in China.

Her debut novel, "Immortality," included in this collection, is about the lives of a family of former eunuchs who lived through the raging years from the Qing Dynasty to the Cultural Revolution. I was quite shocked and said, "WTF⁈“ while I was reading it because I had not been familiar with Chinese history.  It was a short story that made me think about the nation and the citizens.
