　天皇様の短いご挨拶、そして大衆に向かって手を振られる姿を一目見るために、待ったのは約６時間。当日はよく晴れていたので僕は日焼けしてしまいましたし、ものすごく長い列、そして大勢の人でごった返した状況には、少しイライラしました。それでも、それだけ待つ価値は大いにあったと思います。
　アメリカにおける政治理念に関して言うと、僕は割とリバタリアンと近いです。僕が大切にしている信念の一つは、「政府が人々の権利や自由を侵害し得るのであれば、そのために政府への何らかの制限はあるべきである」ということです。アメリカは多民族や”多文化”の国なので、ある一つの文化的価値を完全に受け入れてしまうことは、”アメリカ全土”にとって反感を買うことは間違いがなく、極めて危険です。ですが...
　まあ、それは一旦置いといて。僕は日本に来てからというもの、気づいたことがあります。それは、汎用的な政治理念が日本には存在していない、という事実です。限定された政府に対し反対するつもりは毛頭ありません。ただ、日本での政治のやり方に対しての僕の意見は、アメリカの政治に対する意見とは異なります。なぜなら、日本政府は権利や自由を守る責任があるため、日本文化を保持することが最も大切な優先事項の一つだからです。
　天皇様は、日本や日本の文化の象徴です。大和朝廷の長い歴史上、政治を行った天皇もいましたが、実際権力の座についたのは天皇ではなく他の者であったため、やはりただの象徴的地位でした。しかし象徴といえど、自分自身よりも遥かに大きな、重要な役割を担っていたことは疑いようもありません。将軍や軍事指導者、明治の藩閥、進駐軍、そして現在の政府でも、天皇様を重要な存在として認めているのです。。
　窓ガラス越しに、高いところから万人にスピーチをする天皇様を見ると、僕は本当に感動してしまいました。なぜでしょう？僕は日本人ではありませんし、まだ日本の国籍も保持していません。でも、そんなことは関係が無いように思います。天皇様が醸し出す暖かな雰囲気は、僕の心の奥にまで伝わって来ました。湧き上がってきた感情は、愛や尊敬、感嘆そのものでした。怒っている人、極端な行為をしている人は、誰ももいませんでした。右翼、左翼といった分類は存在せず、そこにあったのは、ただ日本の象徴への愛と、心からの声援でした。 温かな一体感と感動の瞬間は、僕が今まであえて見ないようにしてきた現実に、優しく蓋をしてくれただけなのかもしれません。それでも僕は、日本や日本の文化を出来るだけ守りたい、と思いました。「受け入れられている」という感覚が続く限り、「日本に住んでいる」ことへの誇りは、ますます増えていく一方です。
　長く働き続けてくれた、平成の時代を歩んでくださった天皇に、心から感謝します。本当に、平和の象徴です。あなたは心の情熱に素直に従い、天皇という大役を担う前に、素敵な女性と恋にさえ落ちました。天皇である以前に、人間として、心から尊敬します。文化的・社会的リーダーを目指すものにとって、この上ない模範例なのではないでしょうか。

  We waited for almost six hours to see the Emperor make a small speech and wave at the audience. Before that, we stood in line forever, I got a sunburn, and the crowded space was very irritating. Even with all the discomfort and tests to my patience, it was totally worth it.
  In America, I find myself in the libertarian leaning side of the political spectrum. One of my core beliefs is that there should be restrictions in place that limit the government and prevent it from being too controlling in a way that would infringe upon our freedoms. The US is a multiethnic and multi"cultural" nation, so allowing one set of cultural values rein supreme would be hazardous and counterintuitive to the concept of the whole nation.. but..
  Well anyways, since I have come to Japan, I have realized that there is no one size fits all philosophy for governing. I am still all for limited government, BUT my views on Japan are different than that of America. The Japanese government has the responsibility to uphold the freedoms of the people, but in addition to that, I feel that protecting Japanese culture is also a vital priority.
  The Emperor is the symbol of Japan and its culture. In the very long history of the Yamato Court, there have been Emperors tasked with governing, while others have simply held the position and served a function greater than themselves. Military leaders, Shoguns, the first Meiji cabinet, the allied occupation forces, and even the current government have all recognized and understood the importance of the Emperor's existence.
  Looking up at him on the ledge, making his speech to the thousands of people below, I felt moved. How? I am not Japanese, nor am I a citizen of Japan yet. But that is not the point. The atmosphere of the whole event struck me to the core. Love, respect, and admiration were all that I could sense. As far as I could see, nobody was upset nor was anybody trying to promote an extreme agenda. At this point, there was no right wing, no left wing. Instead, I merely witnessed support and love for the symbol of this culture, of this country. Of course, the excitement and overall impressiveness of the situation shades a reality I may be ignorant to. Even still, I feel that as long as I am working to protect and uphold this culture, my pride for living here will strengthen, as long as the sensation of acceptance will continue.
  Thank you Heisei Emperor for working so long and hard. You are a symbol of peace. From following your passions to even felling in love before taking up the thrown, you are a true example of how to be an excellent cultural and societal leader. You have my utmost respect.
