Trans Healthcare: My thoughts and experience

Hi everyone. I am Rik.

Thank you for getting interested in this article.

Today, I would like to discuss the situation of trans healthcare.

I hope you will enjoy this article.

Let's get started<3

Current Situation of Trans Healthcare

Have you ever heard about trans healthcare?
Have you ever thought about trans healthcare?

It is such a crucial  topic but it is not discussed enough in our world, including in Japan.

In this section, I will explain about the current situation of trans healthcare by dividing it into two parts; public healthcare and gender-affirming care.

Public Healthcare

Many trans people have experienced a lot of struggles in the public healthcare.

That is because many people in the medical field do not have enough knowledge about trans healthcare.

For example, some trans people get questions about differences of their current gender and the gender they were asigned at birth.

The situation like this make trans people feel uncomfortable because it is a kind of "outing."

In some states in the US and some countries, doctors cannot give medical treatments to trans people under the laws, too.

Gender-Affirming Care

First of all, I am going to explain the definition of gender-affirming care.

Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth.

I should mention that not all trans people want to reach out to the gender-affirming care. Some trans people are fine with not taking those medical cares.

Currently, it is difficult to reach out to the gender-affirming care for some reasons, such as the small numbre of doctors who specialize these cares, costs, and legal problems.

In some states in the US, gender-affirming care for kids is banned.

Why Is It Important to Discuss?

It is important to discuss trans healthcare because of meany reasons. I will mention some of them.

First of all, every single person should be able to reach out to the medical care they need.

Secondly, gender-affirming careshould be supported by more poeople so that we can overturn the laws that ban the gender-affirming care.

Overall, I do believe that people in the medical field are supposed to give the edical cares to help people feel better and increase the QOL. Therefore, we need to accelrate the discussion around trans healthcare to improve the situation around the trans community.

My Experiences

As a trans nonbinary individual, I have faced some struggles in the realm of healthcare. I would like to share my experience here.

When I was in the US, I was hospitalized. At that time, people at the hospitals used wrong pronouns for me and misgednerd me for many times, although I corrected them.

I think that it should nt happen at the hospital because as I mentioned, people in the medical feild should respect patients and make them feel better both mentally and physically.

Not only this experience at the hospital but also I face issues on daily basis.

For example, when I go to the hospital, I need to fill the form about my information but usually, there is no box for genders other than male or female in Japan.

I always need to be reminded of my gender assigned at birth and it is not fun.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I do think that the education about trans healthcare for the poeple in the medical field should be improved.

I believe that it will lead to the world to be more kind ad inclusive for everyone all over the world.
