蓮の花を見ると、レンコンの天ぷらを思い出します。これも煩悩なのでしょうか（苦笑）

臨済寺の蓮の花

This season, local people visit Rinzaiji Temple in the morning.

この季節、地元の人々は朝、臨済寺を訪れます。

This Buddhist temple is opened only twice a year; however, people can enter the premises except the buildings.

この寺院は年に二回公開されます。しかし建物以外の敷地には入ることが出来ます。

They are attracted by the many lotus flowers blooming in the summer.

皆さん夏に咲くたくさんの蓮の花がお目当てです。

Most of them are blooming in the ponds in front of the main gate, and some of them are in the pots located in the temple’s premises.

ほとんどの花は山門の前にある池に咲いています。そして寺の境内に置いてある鉢に咲いているものもあります。

Since ancient times, lotus flowers have introduced important Buddhist virtues.

古代より、蓮の花は仏教の大事な徳を伝えてきました。

The most well-known one is to live with a pure mind even in challenging situations.

最も知られているのが、困難な状況においてでも純粋な心を持って生きる、と言うことです。

Therefore, we think as if beautiful lotus flowers could cleanse earthly desires from our minds.

それ故に、蓮の花は私たちの心から煩悩を浄め流してくれるように思えます。

In order to see them, it is important to go to Rinzaiji Temple at the right time.

蓮の花を見るには、ちょうど良い時間に臨済寺に行くことが大事です。

Around 8 a.m. is the best.

午前8時ごろがベストです。

I asked a man who was enjoying taking pictures there.

臨済寺で写真を撮るのを楽しんでいる方に尋ねました。

According to him, the flowers began to bloom around 6 a.m.

その方によると、蓮の花は朝の6時ごろ咲き始めます。

Especially from 7 to 8 a.m., the flowers are actively opening their petals, and they are fully open around 8 a.m.

特に7時から8時にかけて花が開いてきます。そして8時ごろ花が完全に開きます。

Around 10 a.m., the petals gradually close.

10時ごろ、花びらが徐々に閉じてきます。

This phenomenon will only last about 3 days.

この現象は約3日ほどしか続きません。

On the fourth day, the flowers start to fall off, keeping the flower floating open on the pond and creating a magnificent view before the flower completely dies.

4日目には、池にそのままの姿で開いたまま落ち始めます。そしてまさに枯れる前に美しい姿を見せます。

Lotus flowers remind me of delicious lotus roots harvested in autumn.

蓮の花を見ると、秋に収穫される美味しいレンコンを思い出します。

It is said that Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu loved eating lotus roots to keep him healthy.

徳川家康公は健康を保つために、レンコンを食べるのが好きだったと言われています。

The sticky component called ‘mucin’ is rich in lotus roots.

「ムチン」と呼ばれる粘着性のある要素がレンコンには豊富です。

I want to reserve the special root crop raised in the Asahata area, which was also the same production site where Lord Ieyasu’s favorite lotus roots were also cultivated.

私はあさはた地区で栽培された特別なレンコンを予約したいです。

あさはた地区は徳川家康が好んだレンコンも栽培されていた生産地なのです。
