若者がひとり山道を歩いていた。

前方には深い谷がある。
やがて、吊り橋が見えてきた。

たった今、向こう側から
老婆が渡り終えところである。

不気味なほどに腰が曲がった老婆だった。

「あんた、よそ者だな」
「ええ、道に迷いまして」

「それにしても、大きくて重そうだな」
おかしな事を言う老婆だった。

「この先はどこへ行くのでしょうか?」
吊り橋を指して若者は尋ねた。

老婆はシワだらけの顔をゆがめた。
「そりゃ、あの世だな」

「おかしな地名ですね」
「つまりな、死ぬんじゃよ」

吊り橋の先は行き止りだという。

山道は森の中へ分け入り、
その途中で消えているらしい。

この吊り橋を渡るよそ者は少ない。

少ないが、必ず自殺する。
なぜか首吊りをするのだそうだ。

「おどかさないでくださいよ」

またもや老婆は顔をゆがめた。
笑ったつもりなのだろう。

若者は吊り橋を渡り始めた。

深い深い谷底。
古めかしい木と縄の通り道。

歩くたびに揺れるので怖い。
だが、怖くても渡らなければならない。

若者は自分を励ますのだった。

Suspension Bridge that Hangs the Neck

A young man was walking alone on a mountain road.

There is a deep valley ahead.
Eventually he saw a suspension bridge.

The old woman is about to cross over
from the other side.

She was an old woman with an eerily bent waist.

"Are you a stranger?"
"Yes, I'm lost."

"Even so, you look big and heavy."
The old woman said something strange.

"Where does the end of this bridge continue?"
Pointing to the suspension bridge,
the young man asked.

The old woman distorted her wrinkled face.
"Well, continue to that world."

"It's a strange place name."
"In other words, you're dying."

She says
the end of the suspension bridge is a dead end.

It seems that the mountain road breaks into the forest
and disappears on the way.

Few strangers cross this suspension bridge.

Although few, they always commit suicide.
For some reason they hang themselves.

"Don't be scared."

Once again, the old woman distorted her face.
She must have laughed.

The young man began to cross the suspension bridge.

Deep deep valley bottom.
Old-fashioned trees and rope paths.

He's scared because it sways every time he walks.
But he has to cross even if he is scared.

The young man encouraged himself.
