【イギリス留学#33】文章の形式
今回の授業でもいつもと同じようにEssayを書き進めていくのですが、今日は文章の形式や適切な表現について特に深く学びました。その内容について書いていきたいと思います。
ちなみに今日のカバー画像(サムネイル)は、ロンドン観光していた時に見つけた壁に描いてあった絵です。イギリスのトンネルとか微妙に暗い所の壁って大体何か描いてます。

#12でも習ったのですが、Essayの中でBody paragraphを書くときにはPEELという形式で書くことが大切みたいです。それがどういった形式なのか説明していきます。
P=Point
What is your paragraph about?
E=Evidence
What relevant information have you found in your research?
E=Explanation
What does this evidence show?
Why is it important?
What will it lead to?
L=Link
How does this paragraph relate to your title or opinion?
そしてこの中で今日はEvidenceについて深掘りしました。Evidenceにも以下の2つがあります。
Quotation: use another research/another person opinion
→someone else's exact words
Paraphrasing: rewrite another words
→use your own words
Quotationの方が正確さを求められるAcademic Englishでは適していますが、文章を短くして読みやすくするためにParaphrasingを活用することも大事です。
またIntroductionやConclusionをどういった形式で書くべきなのかも学びました。こちらです。
Introductions
1. Give brief background to the topic.
2. Explain any key words that are used in the title / introduction (if necessary).
3. Outline the structure of your essay
4. Give your opinion (thesis statement)
Conclusions
1. Repeat your opinion
2. Explain the main reason for your opinion
3. Explain the main reason why you disagree with the alternative view.
Reporting verbs
Academic EnglishにおいてEssayを書くときには、客観的な表現を用いる必要があります。以下の①～③の単語と④⑤の単語のどちらがEssayに適切かという問題が出ました。
①Claim
②argue
③agree
④show
⑤explain
正解は④⑤です。①②③はOpinionなので自分の考えでしかなく、正確さに欠けます。それに対して④⑤はfactなので正確さがあり、こちらの方がEssayには適しています。
こういった形でReporting verbsをfactとopinionに分けてみました。
【fact】
state/prove/show/explain/note/observe/demonstrate/point out
【opinion】
argue/believe/claim/discuss/question/suggests/conclude/write
こういった表現を用いてEssayを書いていくことが大事だということを学んで、グループで作成していたEssayを修正して今回の授業は終わりました。
おわりに
改めて授業の内容を書いているので、ラーニングピラミッド的に復習が出来て凄く助かってます。めっちゃ自己中心的な発信ですが、noteなんてそんなもので良いと思います。本日も読んでくださりありがとうございました。

英語力向上のために留学期間中は英語日記を書いています。英語で話した内容などを書くことが多いです。まだまだ英語力が乏しいですが、暖かい目で読んでください。※Chat-GPTで修正はしています。
I baked bread too long, and it smooked terribly. Even if the bread is frozen, it only needs a minutes to bake.
My friend asked me "Did you do your homework?" I replied "I did it." But I don't have confidence so I should have answered "I did it, to some extent."
