My experiences in NZ #35

Hello there.

In my last post, I shared working and a cherished memory at “Rikka” with you. I’ll write about my daily dietary habits in NZ today.

Regarding breakfast, my host family liked to eat bread baked with a mixture of several kinds of nuts and thin slices, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. I prefer plain bread, so my host mother prepared it for me.

Are you familiar with “vegemite” in Australia? And they have “marmite” in NZ; both products are fermented foods. These products are similar, but I couldn’t distinguish the differences. Many Kiwis prefer to marmite and eat spreading on the bread. I believe many Japanese aren’t fond of it, and so am I. I had plain bread, strawberry jam, and a cup of milk tea every morning.

At the first food restaurant, McDonald’s and BurgerKing, they served “Kiwi burgers.” It didn’t include kiwi fruit, but “Beetroot” in it. I suppose that people who play the online game, "Minecraft" are familiar with Beetroot. Beetroot is one of the vegetables and looks like a Japanese radish. However, the radish’s inside is white, and the Beetroots are red.

They put them sliced and pickled sweetly in the burger. Kiwi love Beetroot, so it is called “Kiwi burger.” Honestly, I was not too fond of it. When I ordered a burger at the burger shop, I always asked to remove the Beetroot.

Talking about McDonald’s, they served “soft serve ice cream,” I don’t remember the exact name, though; it was only 50 cents, less than 40 yen at that time, and yum. I hoped I could eat it also in Japan, and after several years, it finally started being sold in Japan! However, it was different from what I expected to taste. Hopefully, I’d like to taste it in NZ again someday.

I wrote more than I expected, so to be next time.
