This post focuses on one of the fall courses, Microeconomics.
今回は秋学期に履修している授業の１つ、ミクロ経済学についてです。

ＳＩＰＡでは量的分析を重視していることもあり、経済と次回で述べる統計が必修科目になっています。
ミクロ経済学は２人の教授がおり選択できるのですが、私が受けているのはこちらのProfessor Paolaのほう。

Because SIPA puts an emphasis on quantitative analysis, Microeconomics and Quantitative analysis are core courses to all students.
We can choose between two professors' course, and I take Prof Paola Valenti's course.

クラスは３０人程度で、先生の英語がとても聞き取りやすく、こんな私でも発言が比較的自由に出来ます。
内容は日本で学ぶ経済学とそこまで違いはないですが、始めにDemand and Supply、そしてAnalysis of Competitive Markets、それからConsumer Theory、Producer Theoryと続きます。
日本で学んだ時とは少し順番が違いますが、はじめに全体像を理解するという意味ではこちらの方が良いと感じました。

This class is composed of thirty students, and professor's English is fairly easy to understand, also even I can freely speak up in this class.
The contents are not so different from what I learned in Japan, but starts with Demand and Supply, followed by Analysis of Competitive Markets, Consumer Theory and Producer Theory.

何といっても、アメリカの大学の授業のいいところは、評価基準が明確だということ！
例えばこの授業では、グレーディングの内訳が以下のとおりとシラバスに明記されています。What I think is preferable about courses in U.S. universities is that there is a clear criteria regarding grading!
For example, this course has its grading in syllabus as follows.

Final exam 30%
first exam 15%
second exam 25%
homework assignments 20%
attendance, punctuality and participation 5%
peer review 5%

また、授業では計算よりも、「どうしてその結果になるのか？」という理論に重きを置いています。
これは計算が得意な日本人にとってはかなり厄介（英語で説明しなければいけないため）なのですが、逆に捉えれば理論を理解した方が実生活では役に立つ！とポジティブに捉えることにしました＾＾

In addition, this course focues on the theory, "Why does this phenomenon lead to this result?" rather than calculation.
This is very problematic for Japanese (good at calculation but not at explaining in English), but I take it for a valuable experience because we can look at everyday things in terms of theory.

この授業では毎週課題が出て、４人のグループで回答を作成して提出します。
私のグループは日本人２人＋アメリカ人１人＋メキシコ人の経済に詳しい人１人という構成。
日本人の勤勉性＋ネイティブの英語力＋経済の知識、で何とか切り抜けています。

This course has assignments every week, which we need to tackle and submit in a group of four.
My group is made up of two Japanese including me, native American and Mexican who is familiar with economics.
I believe we can make it through using the diligence of Japanese, English ability of native speaker and knowlege of economics.

そして、実は先日、このミクロ経済で始めてテストがありました！

まずびっくりなのは開始時間が午後８時だったこと（笑）

内容ですが、案の定、計算問題はそこまで難しくなかったのですが、説明問題に時間を取られてしまいました・・・。この辺りも改善していかなければですね。

Furthermore, I actually took the first exam the other day!
The most surprising things was that it took place at 8pm.
Calculation was not that difficult, but I spent too much time on explanation, which I think I should improve next time.
