Introduction of the last course in my semester, Governing the 21st century city (USP core course)!
さて春学期最後の授業、Governing the 21st century cityの紹介！

（こちらは前学期の政治学の授業）

1. コースについて

教授のEster Fuchsは私の専攻しているUSP（Urban and Social Policy、都市政策）のディレクターであり、NYCの「25 of Most Remarkable Women」にも選ばれました。
彼女は2001～2005年にBloomberg市長の下でチャータースクールや放課後プログラム等の改革をしていました。

The prof Ester Fuchs is a Director of Urban and Social Policy Concentration, and selcted as one of the 25 most remarkable women in NYC this year. She served for the Bloomberg administration from 2001 to 2005, focusing on such programs as after-school and charter schools.

授業はシラバスによるとこんな感じなのですが、これ通りになったことは一度もありません。笑
The syllabus is as follows, although each class never went exactly like this.

2. 授業の特色について

授業はあるときは教授が１時間しゃべり続け、あるときは生徒でのディスカッション中心と予測が出来ないのが面白い点です。

実務家ということもあり、教授の話の引き出しがとても多いです。
例えば、NYCの放課後プログラムについて「今サービスが必要な子供がどこにいるか」と「どの地域にお金がわたっているか」を可視化してニーズに政策が対応していないことを明確に示したとのこと。
シンプルですけどとても分かりやすいですよね。

この他、利害関係者がどのように裏で動いていて、あるときは政策をつぶそうと画策するかなんかもリアルな話を色々してくれました。

Sometimes the prof kept talking for more than one hour, sometimes the conversation is driven by students. She has plenty of experiences as a practitioner, such as visualizing "where are the needy childlen" and "where the money is going" about after-school program, and showed the disparity across regions. Simple but very strong arugument.

In addition, she talked about the "real" dynamics in policymaking; how stakeholders are interacting and even trying to impede policy implementation.

3. 評価とグループプロジェクトについて

この授業の評価は（たぶん）８割以上がグループプロジェクトでのプレゼンとペーパーでなされます。

５つのグループがあり、私の所はニュージャージー州ニューアーク市の教育政策、とりわけいかに貧困からなる学力格差を是正するかというポイントで提言を行いました。

ニューアークは、1995年に州政府が学校のコントロールを乗っ取ったのですが、約20年の時を経てそれが市に返されることになっており、その政治力学にも着目したものになります。

The group project (presentation and paper) will acoount for most of the grading.
We have five groups, and my group focused on education policy in Newark, NJ, particularly addressing the achievement gap resulting from poverty through psychosocial intervenetion.

Newark is now also in the middle of regaining local control over public schools from the state (in 1995 the state took over public schools).

ということで、実は本日で春学期の授業も終わり！後は成績を待つのみになります。
今学期の振り返りについてもまた書きますね！

Actually this semester was officially over today!! Now I can fully relax and wait for the grading.... I'll post on the reflection of this semester soon!
