4 days left until departure!
Let's sort out the English for 'introducing myself' and 'giving souvenirs' at the conference.
Last week I was feeling impatient because I didn't make as much progress with my English studies as I would have liked, but with four days left (plus 14 hours of one-way flight time on the plane), I'm ready to do what I can now to prepare!
Things I can do now are: introducing myself to the people around me when I attend the conference (for networking), points or our analysis in this paper, how to give souvenirs to bring from Japan.
That's about all I can think of in a flash. So I'll think about the crucial self-introductions, etc.
■Introduce yourself to the people around you at the conference
(for networking purposes)
Hello, my name is TAKA. I usually work in data analysis in the area of human resources at my company. In particular, recently I have been doing causal analysis on employee motivation. As is the case with many organisations, team motivation differs from one to another, even though the company is the same. We have found that for highly motivated teams, 'employees feeling a sense of growth' is important for team motivation. For teams with low motivation, we have found that it is important for the management team to give employees 'dreams and a sense of excitement for work.
We are now analysing the effectiveness of specific measures implemented by the HR department and each team. We have found that holding quarterly kick-off meetings within the team is linked to employee motivation. Today we are attending a conference to present the paper I co-authored. I would be happy to exchange information with you in the future.
What do you usually do in your job?
■Points of analysis in our paper
We are presenting at this conference about how to communicate with employees to improve their motivation even after the introduction of a PC operation log management system. Please imagine with me. If you were an employee of a company and were told by the human resources department that a log management system would be installed on your PC from now on. Then would your motivation increase? We expected that many employees would feel the HR department and their boss try to monitor employees and that it would be difficult to motivate them. We, therefore, developed two hypotheses: first, we could tell employees that the system was being installed for their mental health care, and second, we could tell them that the system was being installed to find the real contributors to their work and to give them a proper evaluation.
In both cases, the message is not just to tell the employees that you are installing a PC log management system, but to make them feel benefit from it, and the results of the survey showed us that only one hypotheses of these two would significantly increase motivation.
■ How to give souvenirs (flavoured teas)
It is well known in Japan that the UK has a thriving tea culture. Black tea is very popular in Japan and I like it too. In Japan, you can enjoy tea arranged in a variety of flavours. Flavoured tea might be a bit wicked, but if you like, here is a souvenir from Japan for you.
If I could prepare these sentences, I will be able to express my feelings. I will then practice a little in online English and on the flight and memorise them so that I could say them fluently.
I've also just downloaded some British films and dramas from Amazon Prime Video for studying English on the flight, and I've already downloaded about 20 presentations from TED talks, so I'm well prepared.
So that's about it for today!
See you soon! 😉✨
