PBS News Weekend Aug. 19, 2023

What a new Montana law means for transgender children and their families

Families and medical providers in Montana are preparing for a new law set to take effect in October that bans certain medical treatments for minors with gender dysphoria. Proponents of the bill say the law protects children from making medical decisions they may later regret, while others call it dangerous and unethical. Montana PBS's Joe Lesar reports.

[10:52] A new Montana law is set to take effect in October, banning certain medical treatments for minors with gender dysphoria.
[* gender dysphoria = a profound and persistent unhappiness related to characteristics associated with one's biological sex, experienced especially by transgender people (wiktionary); Gender dysphoria (GD) is the distress a person experiences due to a mismatch between their gender identity—their personal sense of their own gender—and their sex assigned at birth. Previously, the diagnostic label gender identity disorder (GID) was used, until it was eliminated in 2013...

[11:47] Sid identifies as non-binary transmasculine. Assigned female at birth, Sid neither identifies as a boy nor a girl, but feels a connection to masculinity.
[* non-binary = nonbinary = relating to or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that is neither entirely male nor entirely female (Merriam-Webster); Non-binaryand genderqueer are umbrella terms for gender identities that are not solely male or female (identities outside the gender binary). Non-binary identities fall under the transgender umbrella, since non-binary people typically identify with a gender that is different from their sex, though some non-binary people do not consider themselves transgender. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-binary_gender ;
[*  Transmasculine, often abbreviated to transmasc, refers to transgender people who have a gender identity, gender expression, or both that is predominantly masculine. [12:10] It wasn't really a surprise when Sid came out. I mean, I kind of always knew they were a little different.
My pronoun is they/them"とか"my pronoun is he/him"というように指定されることもある。

[12:58] Sid is among the last group of transgender youth in Montana who can legally receive gender-affirming care. A new law, Senate Bill 99, takes effect on October 1. It prohibits the use of puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries to treat minors with gender dysphoria.

[13:27] If you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer you see the blood on your hands.
>> Democratic state Representative Zooey Zephyr, Montana's first openly transgender lawmaker, directed that remark at the bill's supporters during debate in April.

[16:59] How the ongoing writers' strike impacts reality and unscripted TV

Writers and actors are still on strike as broadcast TV networks head into the fall season, meaning there will be no new episodes of scripted dramas and comedies.
