静岡市東海道広重美術館を楽しむ方法　パート２

Ukiyoe prints were more of a casual social media form rather than an expensive art in the Edo period．

江戸時代、浮世絵は高価な芸術というよりむしろふだん使われるソーシャルメディアでした。

Ukiyoe is a mass-produced item that was produced through a division of labor, with each craftsman specializing in a different aspect of the process.

浮世絵は大量生産の品で、それぞれの工程に特化した職人により分業制が確立していました。

The first process in the Ukiyoe production starts with a publisher's order, which specifies the subject matter, style, and size of the print.

浮世絵制作の最初の工程は版元の注文です。題材、スタイル、サイズを特定します。

The publisher had to have a keen understanding of what items would be well-desired by the general public.

版元は一般大衆がどんなものを本当に欲しがるのか、鋭い観察眼を持たねばなりませんでした。

One of the most famous publishers in the Edo period is ‘Tsutaya Juzaburo’.

江戸時代最も有名な版元の一人が「蔦屋重三郎」です。

In the present Japan, one of the biggest book chain stores is called ‘Tsutaya Shoten’ (Tsutaya Bookstore).

現在の日本で最も大きな書店のチェーン店の一つは「蔦屋書店」と呼ばれます。

It is said the name originated from this Ukiyoe publisher’s name.

その名前はこの浮世絵の版元の名前から来ていると言われています。

Ukiyoe artists create original designs after receiving an offer from the publisher.

浮世絵師は版元から依頼を受けた後、元のデザインを作ります。

The original design is drawn in black ink.

元のデザインは黒で描かれます。

The drawing is passed onto a carver, who carved the design so carefully.

その絵は彫師（ほりし）に渡され、彫師は丁寧にそのデザインを彫ります。

First, the carver creates a key block called 'Omohan', based on the design, which will then be printed in black.

まず、彫師はデザインに基づいて「主版（おもはん）」と呼ばれる主要な版木を制作します。それから黒で刷ります。

Then, after seeing the printed outcome, the artist needs to certify the colors to be used.

そして、刷ったものを見て、絵師が使う色を指定する必要があります。

Based on the artists' request, other blocks are carved out, one for each color; these are called ’irohan’.（color plates）

絵師の要求に基づいて、他の版木が色に応じて彫られます。これらの版木は「色版（いろはん）」と呼ばれます。
