PBS News Weekend Sept. 24, 2023

[02:31] We knew September 30 was coming all year. And, Kevin McCarthy has been dilatory. He's been fiddling like Nero as Rome burns.

[* < Ancient tradition has it that Nero was so moved by the sight of the great fire that swept across the capital of his empire in the summer of 64 CE that he climbed to the top of the city walls and declaimed from a now-lost epic poem concerning the destruction of Troy. It is said that he wept copiously while reciting lines describing the conflagration that the Greeks put to the fallen city of Troy...

When Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai disappeared after accusing a high-ranking official of sexual assault, the Women’s Tennis Association said it would not hold tournaments in China until her whereabouts were known. Two years later, there’s still no official word about Peng, but the WTA’s China Open begins Tuesday in Beijing. John Yang speaks to Sophie Richardson at Human Rights Watch for more.

[09:40] The Chinese government has a long track record of disappearing people. And whether it's, for example, a journalist named Huang Xueqin who is just tried on Friday after being off the grid for two years, she made her name actually writing about MeToo cases in China, or whether you're talking about the until recently foreign minister who disappeared off the grid in June, the authorities have no trouble simply depriving people of their liberty.

How a lack of regulation for tattoo ink puts Americans’ health at risk

Nearly one in three Americans surveyed this summer said they have at least one tattoo, according to the Pew Research Center. But while tattoo artists are required to have a license in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, tattoo ink is totally unregulated in the United States. Dr. Thomas Rohrer, a dermatologic surgeon, joins John Yang to discuss the associated health risks.

[15:55] Why unexpectedly high ambulance bills are still a problem in the U.S.

In a medical emergency, you want to get to a hospital as quickly as possible. But what happens when the cost of that transportation is hundreds or thousands of dollars, even with insurance? NewsHour health reporter Laura Santhanam joins Ali Rogin to discuss how a legal loophole is creating a dangerous dilemma for families across the country.
《high ambulance bills; 救急車で高額請求; Laura Santhanam, NewsHour digital health reporter; No Surprises Act; legal loophole; ground ambulances not included in the No Surprises Act; 》

[18:31] There were a lot of things that the No Surprises Act tackled, especially thinking about, you know, out-of-network billing. But when it came to ground ambulance services, it was just a bridge too far. Just in large part because the one universal truth, it seems, about ground ambulances in the US is that it's a complex system and it took us decades to get here.

[* a bridge too far = A step or action that is too ambitious ]
